Find our lifeguard towers on the Danish coasts

Since 2009, we have manufactured Tryg's lifeguard towers in collaboration with BBP Arkitekter, Force Technology and the Tryg Foundation. Together we had to develop a lifeguard tower made of a fiberglass reinforced sandwich construction. The towers, which were designed by BBP Arkitekter A/S, are a well-known landmark and have been nominated for the Danish Design Award, had to be executed in composite material with a strict stylistic roadmap.
The test of the prototype went well and was quickly mass-produced. All the lifeguard towers are manufactured in a complex sandwich construction, which includes, among other things, seawater-resistant and anodized aluminum, stainless acid-resistant steel constructions, impact- and scratch-resistant glazing, fire-retardant composite systems and a topcoat surface that is UV-resistant and retains its color.

The Triple Folly

"The Triple Folly comprises a trio of volumes which each represent an item developed by Thomas Demand: a sheet of legal paper, a paper plate, and an American soda jerk’s hat. Equipped with these curiosities, he reached out to Caruso St. John architects with a compelling question. “Can you make this into architecture?”

– Kvadrat Press Release.

The Triple Folly: An architectural landmark in composite materials

When Kvadrat's building was created, we supplied the composite materials that wrap the buildings facade in the distinctive blue light-changing color that The Triple Folly is known for. The building was designed by the architectural firm Caruso St John in collaboration with the famous German artist Thomas Demand.

Dansk Polyglas has been part of the journey from idea to the final expression and work of art that Kvadrat's building is today. With the delivery of color and material samples, mock-ups and test items, we have contributed to the artists' thoughts and ideas being united with the right materials and production methods. The Triple Folly today consists of 3 connected buildings with facade cladding made of pure composite material.

A flexible material

The Triple Folly project is a manifestation of the flexibility that composite materials can contribute to buildings. The flexible material makes it possible to produce large flat surfaces. Kvadrat today has a thin, continuous facade in a composite material that emphasizes the unique blue color.

We created a roof structure in translucent material to mimic a folded paper: light, translucent and smooth.

Kvadrat is located in Ebeltoft. Read more about the construction here: https://carusostjohn.com/projects/kvadrat-pavilion-ebeltoft-dk/

Kulturbroen in Aalborg

In 2017 we delivered and manufactured composite items for Aalborg's bridge: Kulturbroen. It was important that the bridge did not require maintenance and was made of materials with a long lifespan.

Making the bridge's components in composite would meet the strength requirements needed to lift pedestrians and other traffic, and was a good investment in keeping the weight of the bridge down.
The project was carried out in close cooperation with the customer, as a supplier.
Models and molds went through quality control, which ensured that everything lived up to the desired sizes and aesthetic expression. Laminate specifications were drawn up based on strength requirements which were verified by engineering calculations when the first item had been produced and checked by loading the item.

We made a walking area in non-slip material, to ensured that the surface did not become slippery in snow and precipitation. The special material properties of the composite to protect against corrosion means that the bridge does not break down over the years, but instead is long-lasting without the great need for maintenance.
The Kulturbroen is the first composite bridge in Denmark and was designed by COWI and designed by C.F. Moller.

In the same year the bridge was built, it was awarded the Association for Building and Landscape Culture in Aalborg Ros prize. Today, Aalborg's Kulturbroen is a shortcut for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Limfjord without thinking about train traffic and a much-needed alternative to the Limfjord Bridge.

In the evening, the Kulturbroen lights up in its characteristic red colour.

Dimensions and features

The bridge is built on the existing railway bridge and fixed on the west side. The bridge is made of a combination of fiberglass composite (370 meters of fixed bridge spans) and steel (the bridge flap). The 78 fiber composite bridge elements are fixed to the side of the existing railway bridge over the Limfjord and have:

  • Panel dimensions of 2 meters x 4 meters.
  • Composite elements made in sandwich constructions.
  • Made using vacuum infusion.
  • For the laminate construction, the bridge is equipped with high-strength DNV/GL-approved materials.
  • The corridor area is coated with a durable and non-slip plastic surface.
  • The surface is painted with durable UV-resistant special paint.
  • The surface is treated with anti-graffiti.

Cloaked Mirror Body

In 2002, Dansk Polyglas helped produce the Cloaked Mirror Body work and bench. The work was created by artist, sculptor and filmmaker Knut Åsdam (1968) and was commissioned by the Norwegian Foundation for Public Art in Buildings.

With a shape inspired by an u-shaped amphitheater and a minimalist aesthetic that gives associations to science fiction and popular culture, the sculpture had to be executed in a flexible and strong material.
The choice fell on composite and fiberglass made in a sandwich construction with a glossy black surface.

Cloaked Mirror Body stands today in the public park at Oslo's School of Architecture, as a freely accessible aesthetic gathering place that binds the park, the school and the river Akerselva together.
